In order to differentiate our spelling instruction, the third grade will be using flexible grouping across the grade level to ensure that we are reaching all students. With flexible grouping, some students might be switching classrooms for a period of 20 minutes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and meeting with another third grade teacher during that time.
During this time we will be using Words Their Way and Fundations to guide our instruction. These are both research based language programs that GRE has adopted.
Words Their Way: is differentiated instruction of conventions for writing. It includes norms of spelling, hyphenation, capitalization, word breaks, emphasis, and punctuation.
Fundations: is a systematic program in the foundational skills for reading and spelling, emphasizing phonemic awareness, phonics-word study, high frequency word study, fluency, vocabulary, handwriting, and spelling.
Students will take an initial assessment which will help us individualize their placement into an appropriate group. All students will be taking a bi-weekly assessment to monitor progress with the word sort or skill that they were working on. We will then be monitoring this progress and reassessing to ensure that our groups stay flexible.
